The Associated Press Television and Radio Association
is well known for it's workshops and seminars for broadcast
journalists and those who want to be in the news business.
The one this past weekend in Oakland, though, actually
made news! Republican gubernatorial candidate Bill Simon
took a strong stand on offshore oil drilling. California
First Lady Sharon Davis took issue with Simon! The AP's
Michelle R. Smith has the story for us. |
APTRA in Oakland
By Michelle R. Smith
OAKLAND - Politics was on the agenda at the June 8 seminar of
The Associated Press Television-Radio Association of California
and Nevada.
The seminar at APTRA Station of the Year KTVU hosted the morning
announcement of a major policy position by GOP gubernatorial
candidate Bill Simon. Simon said for the first time in his campaign
that he opposed offshore drilling and wanted to phase it out.
He said Gov.
Gray Davis wasn't doing enough to stop the drilling. In the
afternoon, California First Lady Sharon Davis fired back, saying
her husband has been a leader in ending the practice and calling
Simon's comments disingenuous. More than 50 reporters, editors,
producers and students from around the state attended the day-long
meeting to network and pick up ideas.
The meeting was roundly praised for having something for everyone.
One seminar focused on the AP - how it works and how member
stations can use their wire service better. Another showed off
before-and-after clips of experienced broadcasters.
The day's final seminar, led by news directors from Northern
California touched on the job market and the future of broadcasting.
Working broadcasters and those looking for a job then headed
over to Zazoo's to soak up the rays and enjoy Oakland's waterfront.
