2002 PEACE OFFICER MEMORIAL CEREMONY
HONORS FALLEN LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS
By Renee Groese

Victorville: In a touching tribute to law enforcement, San Bernardino County Undersheriff Robert Peppler read the names of 44 officers who have fallen in the line of duty at a memorial dedication in Victorville
during National Peace Officer Week in May. Peppler welcomed hundreds of members of law enforcement agencies, family and friends to the dedication on May 16 at the Victorville Civic Center. San Bernardino County District Attorney Dennis Stout addressed the crowd and talked about the "Man Down" Statue unveiled and placed in a special kioske outside the Civic Center. Two other "Man Down" statues are located in the Rancho Cucamonga Court House and in the San Bernardino Civic Center.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department Mounted Honor Guard and Bagpiper gave tribute to the Riderless Horse. The Color Guard lined up and as each agencies name was read, the officers in
the Color Guard approached the podium and placed one white glove in front
of the statue while Undersheriff Peppler read the names of the fallen officers.

The San Bernardino Sheriff Department performed a 21-Gun Salute, and Sgt. Dexter Thomas of the Ontario Police Department played Taps, followed by the Sheriff's Department aviation unit doing a flyover and a releasing of 16 doves.

In the Simple Performance of Duty

In the simple performance of duty,
he pinned on a badge,
checked his gear with a practiced eye,
and kissed his loved ones good-bye.

In the simple performance of duty,
he reported for work,
joked with his buddies at roll call,
and made his last trip down the squad room hall.

In the simple performance of duty,
he answered the call to help the helpless, to find the lost,
no matter the danger or how great the cost.

In the simple performance of duty,
he lay down his life, for those in peril he tried to save,
our brave friend went to his grave.

In the simple performance of duty,
we honor his deed,
as we carry him to rest in a flag-draped casket,
long after the world has forgotten,
we shall never forget.

Never judge or regret what he did,
In the simple performance of duty.
