APTRA Academy Grads SPEAK OUT!
NOTE FROM HAL:
Every
year APTRA Academy turns into a life changing weekend for some
who travel all the way across the country to participate in
this unique boot camp for aspiring news reporters and anchors.
They come feeling one way and leave feeling another. And, every
year there are some very nice notes that are sent after the
weekend is over. This year is no exception.
As the Dean and Founder of APTRA Academy -- and, this year's
first-ever APTRA Academy En Espanol -- these notes are very
gratifying.
I'd like to share some of them with you. I have edited some
of them to shorten them or make or remove more personal thoughts.
Again, my thanks to all of those aspiring broadcasters who came
to participate in the camp and, of course, all of the great
mentors who gave of their time and put their hearts into helping
others who have dreams of being just like them.
Now, a few of those messages ...
I just wanted to thank you for putting together this camp for
us. I attended the anchor academy and I feel so lucky to have
received this opportunity. I learned so much and the mentors
were wonderful and gave a lot of great advice.
I really appreciate you doing this camp. It is such a wonderful
opportunity for all of us aspiring broadcasters to get hands
on experience. I look forward to attending more APTRA events.
Thank you,
Joy Lambert

I just wanted to thank you for creating the reporter's academy.
I had a great time this weekend, met many talented and creative
people, and learned so much about the business.
I was especially impressed with all the mentors who gave so
tirelessly. They showed me what true passion and dedication
is all about.
Your camp confirmed my decision that I am in the right career.
Thanks again!
Yours,
Jennifer Kim

Just wanted to drop you a line to say thanks for a great boot
camp. I was really impressed with the caliber of the mentors
and participants.
I was thrilled to be able to get into the anchor academy.I am
fairly new to the broadcasting arena and am now sure I want
to pursue anchoring. I can't wait to get behind another anchor
desk.
I have been looking for similar programs and am even more impressed
how you provided all that you did for only $300.
Thanks,
Maxx Hamilton

I just wanted to share a few thoughts about the academy.
First I'd like to say "thank you" for giving students
like myself a chance to experience a day in the life of a reporter.
Last weekend's experience was tremendous. I was doing things
that I only dreamed about doing. I came home with a whole positive
attitude and better outlook in life, and determined to make
my dreams into a reality.
I made friends, and established connections that will forever
have a lasting impression in my life. Thank you so much for
giving me an opportunity to experience the day in the life of
a reporter. I feel so much better about myself, and more confident
in myself, because I know I can do it, I just didn't know how
to.
The mentors were very supportive and very patient. Sometimes
I feel like I have no support system in my everyday life. With
the new connections I've made, I feel like I have support and
encouragement.
Thanks again for your help and encouragement, and for establishing
the academy.

As a result from my experience in Malibu, CA., one of my first
packages done at school this semester was a great success. I
used every single tip i learned at the camp in the University
of Central Florida weekly newscast. My professors and classmates
loved it. Thank you and to all the people involved in the event
for organizing such an incredible weekend for all of us aspiring
to be better journalist and also for making the Spanish Academy
a part of APTRA.
To my mentors Claudia, Naibe and Hector: "muchisimas gracias".
Sincerely,

This was my first year attending the Anchor Academy and I really
enjoyed it! My mentor was Shari Small from KSBY San Luis Obispo
and she really worked with my co-anchor and me until we got
it. She was firm, yet supportive -- and she really knew her
stuff. It was also so exciting to be in the same room with Phil
Shuman, Patrick Healy, Ross Becker, John Beard and you. I look
forward to next year -- can't wait.
Best regards.

I had a blast at the APTRA Academy, not only did I learn so
much about the business, but I had so much fun in the process.
It was too bad it went so quick. I am also grateful there is
such an academy because it is very helpful and I have wonderful
people through the process.
Thank you so much for everything. You have been of great help.
Cheers,

I had a wonderful time at the APTRA academy and will be attending
the Holiday Party as well as APTRA Prep. I've been spreading
the word around Chapman as well. Your organization is great
and something I have found very beneficial to myself as well
as others pursuing a career in this field.
Thanks again!
