Why I Wrote This Book

“I didn’t set out to become a journalist — and I certainly didn’t expect it to last nearly sixty years.

This book is about the unexpected path that led me here — the stories that stayed with me, the mistakes I made, the mentors who guided me, and the people who trusted me with their truth.

An Accidental Career is my way of sharing that journey and reminding others that the things in our lives that seem unintended can be life-changing.”

Organizing Memories: Turning Years of Experience into Chapters

Organizing decades of journalism into coherent chapters was daunting. I realized that a memoir is not chronological in the same way news stories are. It needs themes, arcs, and pacing.

I created a framework by identifying key lessons and memorable moments, then grouped them by topic. This structure made the book easier to write and more engaging for readers.

Writers should spend time organizing before writing extensively — a solid structure saves time and enhances the story.

Writing Honestly: The Balance Between Fact and Emotion

Memoirs require honesty without embellishment. I found myself revisiting emotional moments and weighing how to present them authentically. My goal was to respect facts while conveying feelings.

This balance is crucial: readers trust the memoirist to tell the truth, yet they also connect with the emotional journey. Sharing vulnerability made the narrative richer.

For aspiring authors, honesty is non-negotiable — it’s what gives a memoir credibility and heart.

Overcoming Writer’s Block: Strategies That Worked for Me

Even experienced writers face blocks. For me, it was moments of self-doubt and overthinking. I overcame it by setting small goals, writing without judgment, and revisiting my notes for inspiration.

Sometimes stepping away from the page, reading, or walking helped ideas flow. Writer’s block isn’t failure; it’s part of the process.

I encourage authors to keep moving forward, even in short increments — progress builds momentum.
